Fallout Shelter Sign
Written by Cristina Raszewski

Fallout shelters were a common staple of American life during the 1950's and 60's. These fallout shelters were a defense measure designed to decrease the casualties of a nuclear attack. They were intended to prevent those inside from exposure to harmful fallout, or the radioactive dust created during a nuclear blast. Most shelters were also designed with the aim of protecting its inhabitants from the likely aftermath of radiation.

This sign represents the fear and ensuing tensions that gripped the nation during the Cold War. Today these signs are remnants of an era in which Americans faced a constant uncertainty of what tomorrow may bring.

This is an unused sign printed by the Department of Defense.
