Wilmington NC coup d'etat
Written by Jeremy Hilburn

On November 10, 1898 in Wilmington, NC, white supremecists successfully engineered a coup d'etat against the white, Republican mayor and white and black Republican city council - both popularly elected. Up until the coup, Wilmington was a "model Reconstruction" city in that it integrated white and black men into positions of power who worked together for the benefit of Wilmington. The reasons the white supremecists used to take power was an article in the Wilmington Daily, the only black-owned newspaper in NC at the time. The editor, Alexander Manly, wrote an article in response to claims that black men were raping white women, that white men "should be more protective of their women against sexual advances of men from all races." This is a picture of Manly's printing press after it was destroyed in the coup. The Wilmington insurrection is the only example of a muncipal government in the United States being overthrown by violence.
