Space Lunch
Written by Robert Coven

Lost in Space, Lunch Box, Thermos Corp., 1967

Irwin Allen's TV series, Lost in Space, aired on CBS from 1965 to 1968.  The plot traces the galactic odyssey of the Robinson family.  Their adventures are based on the novel, The Swiss Family Robinson (1812) --which, itself, was taken from Defoe's, Adventures of Robinson Crusoe (1719), a fictionalized account of Alexander Selkirk's marooning (1709-1712) on a Pacific island off the coast of Chile.

Despite the futuristic setting, the television show reinforced the cultural norms of the 1960s.  For example, Dr. Maureen Robinson, a biochemist, wife to astrophysicist Dr. John Robinson, and mother of their three children, Judy, Penny, and Will, spends little time in professional endeavors; rather, she is often engaged in the duties of a suburban housewife: cleaning the flying saucer, preparing extraterrestrial picnic lunches, and tending her brood.
