This is the menu for the opulent wedding reception of Maria Ewing Sherman and Thomas William Fitch, married Thursday, October 1, 1874. Maria Sherman, otherwise known as "Minnie" was the eldest daughter of the esteemed Civil War General William Tecumseh Sherman. Minnie met her future husband, Lieutenant Thomas William (Will) Fitch of the Engineer Corps of the Navy, in London. They were married shortly after in a grand ceremony in Washington, D.C. Lieutenant Fitch retired from the Navy at the insistence of Minnie's father, who wished for him to enter business. The newlyweds moved to St. Louis, Ohio, residing in a house owned by Minnie's parents. Minnie and Will had seven children, though only four survived. Later the couple moved to Pittsburg, where in 1913 Minnie passed away. |
