This is an 1875 marriage certificate of two prominant members from Pelham, Westchester County NY. I retrieved the certificate from a historic blog of Pelham. What is interesting about the certificate is its simplicity. It was handwritten and folded once, yet it served as the legal certificate of marriage. This is all the more striking because both of the marriage partners, Robert Black and Mary Witherby, were both wealthy members of their community. |
