"Pillow~Dex" game
Written by Liz Saylor
At the turn of the 20th century, parlor games has  become a traditional form of popular entertainment in  American households. There was a rise and  development of a middle-class that could begin to  afford to purchase games, as well as spend time  participating in leisure activities. The box cover for  Parker Brothers' game Pillow-Dex offers an idyllic  glimpse into the American parlor at the turn of the  century.  Ideas and beliefs toward was was considered  appropriate for children had changed from 18th century  Puritanical thought when even playing cards were judged as "works of the devil" (Orbanes).  Play and amusement became appropriate forms of pastime for young learners a century later.
This could be used in elementary, middle, and high school classrooms studying history. Changes Over Time is a major unit for history in the standard course of study.  This specific item would be an excellent example of how not only games, but leisure activities for children have changed immensely over time.

"Games are an art form as well as symbols of our cultural history."- Bruce Whitehill
