Origin of the Term: "Technology"
Written by Robert Coven

Title Page of Bigelow Curriculum

This title page, taken from the curriculum Dr. Jacob Bigelow established at Harvard (ca. 1829), is often cited as the first popularization of the term: "technology."  Leo Marx, in his seminal work: The Machine in the Garden: Technology and the Pastoral Ideal in America (1964), credits Bigelow with coining the word.  The Oxford English Dictionary (1994), however, gives primacy to an English publication of 1615.  In either case, the newness of the term is evidence of how recent has been a scholarly interest in craft and manufacturing.
