One of the Wonders of the Age
Written by Cristina Raszewski

This 1888 advertisement printed in Boston, Massachusetts publicizes ‘one of the wonders of the age.’ Introducing the first electric street railway in Massachusetts, this publication promotes the July 9th opening of the new electric road. This technology represented a great advance in machinery as well as human ingenuity. The horse drawn lines of the 1850’s and the problems inherent in that system were on the way out the door. These electric street railways offered passengers the ability to make a trip in one-half to one-third of the time typically taken by horse. Due to the ability to carry more passengers and the decrease in long term animal care expenses, transportation would become cheaper. Finally, the dung-free roads would provide a less polluted city that would help not only the aesthetics, but the health of city dwellers as well.
