I wish I were a Man - WWI Navy Recruitment Poster
Written by Cristina Raszewski

This is a Navy recruiting poster by artist Howard Chandler Christy issued in 1917. Recruitment posters became commonplace during WWI and in many cases attempted to romanticize the war. While the majority of these recruitment posters focused on instilling a sense of patriotism, many also attempted to elicit a sense of travel, adventure and increase in social status for enlisting soldiers. This particular recruitment poster portrays a beautiful woman dressed in the garb of a Navy Officer. This poster goes even further than many and states "If I were a man, I'd join the Navy" and "Be a man and do it." These messages were intended to instill in the male population a sense of obligation and responsibility to join the war effort, in effect questioning the manhood of those that chose not to. This war poster is an interesting example of not only military recruitment during the First World War, but also provides a glimpse of the social roles and expectation of men and women during this time.
