This leaflet advertising Lane Bryant’s sterilized maternity outfit was published around 1910. The leaflet, found at Duke University Libraries Digital Collection, contains four pages stressing the importance of a sterilized maternity outfit and encouraging expectant mothers to order these essentials immediately for the reduced price of $14.50. The sterilized maternity outfit includes “every article needed at confinement,” items such as rubber sheets, delivery pads, delivery aprons and talcum powder. The ad also includes a coupon for gentlemen to order their wives the essential sterilized maternity outfit. This leaflet clearly illustrates the changes that have occurred regarding pregnancy and motherhood as well as societal and medical expectations in America.
