The image to the left represents the front page of Raleigh's own News & Observer on December 7th, 1941. On this day, Japan attacked the United States at Pearl Harbor. As a result of the attack, 2,345 military personnel and 57 civilians were killed. The attack pushed U.S. public opinion of World War II from one of isolationism to one of acceptance that participation in the War would be inevitable. Roosevelt documented this day as a "date that will live in infamy." From what one can see of this image, the front page of the News and Observer headlines stories relating only to World War II. This image would be especially beneficial in an 8th grade social studies classroom studying North Carolina and U.S. history.
