Fala FDR's Dog
Written by Rachel Palmer

Dog MedalFala FDR’s Dog (Barkers for Britain)

Fala was President Roosevelt’s much loved pet.  In 1941 a campaign began to raise much needed cash for war torn Britain.  Pet owners could purchase a Barkers for Britain tag for $.50 and their pet could become an official “Barker for Britain”.

Many images and stories still exist of Fala.  Fala is the only presidential dog featured in a statue. One of FDR’s most famous and humorous speeches was labeled the Fala speech (start at 7:00). In the speech FDR rebuts claims that millions of taxpayers dollars were spent looking for a forgotten Fala on one of the Aleutian Islands during a presidential visit.
