The Exodusters
Written by Jeffrey Probert

Exoduster Handbill                                                                              Exodusters were African Americans who emigrated from the southern United States following the end of Reconstruction in 1877.  This westward movement continued throughout the 1880s and 1890s during the period of southern Redemption.  The Exodusters settled primarily in Kansas, Nebraska and Colorado.   The African American population in Kansas in 1870 was 16,250.   It increased to 43,110 in 1880.  Key organizers of the migration were Henry Adams and Benjamin "Pap" Singleton.

Teachers of United States History could use these images when examining Westward Expansion after the Civil War or as a follow up to Reconstruction and the emergence of segregation in the American South after Reconstruction.
